Police Visit

On Friday a police man came to our class to tell us about the police.

First he told us about the jobs police do like catch robbers, stop drink drivers, stop speeders and much more.

After that he put some pictures on the desks for us to explain to him.

Then he showed us his tools. They were handcuffs, pepper spray, baton, firearm, walkie talkie, taser, first aid kit and bullet proof vest.

After that we walked to his car. When we got there he put on his siren and let us sit in his car.

I had so much fun I can't wait for next time.My favourite part was sitting in the police car.

Oil and Water Don't Mix!!!

Oil and water don't mix because oil sits on top of the water.

Oil gets into water because of boats loaded with oil breaking in half, people pouring oil into drains or sinks and people spilling oil into the water when filling up their boat.

When oil gets into water birds swim into it and get covered with oil so they can't fly very well. Sometimes fish swim into oil thats on top of the sea, that causes the fish to not swim very well and die.

People put up a floating wall called a boom on top of the sea around the oil spill to make it stop getting any bigger, then they use a thing like a vacuum cleaner to suck up all of the oil that was on top of the water.

If you want to help stop oil getting into the water and help save the enviroment, you can try to be careful when filling up your boat and not pouring oil into drains and sinks.

Decomposition

Decomposition is when animals and plants die and their bodies break down and turn into soil by worms helping a lot. For dead animals and plants to turn into soil it needs some worms, bacteria, fungi, air, water and sun. Without worms dead animals and plants would just lie there and cover the world and wouldn't turn into soil.

When an animal or plant dies a worm will come along and eat all the good stuff out of it and poop it out to make really good fertiliser for the plants. When a Tui dies its body breaks up and a maggot eats all the soft bits and leaves the hard bits like its bones, feathers, beak, legs and head. Eventually the hard bits break up and turn into soil.

Oil and Water don't Mix

Today we watched a very interesting video about the damage oil does to the environment when it gets into water. Follow this link to view the video.
