Some fabulous photos by Mrs Tombolato of our performance to the Junior school.

On the 4 of December the Middle School introduced us to their performance. Their item was called Rainbows. There was a boy called Robert who loved different kind of colours.

The first colour was red. They all sang a song called Rudolph the Red nose Reindeer, Pohutukawa Tree and Take a little Bit of Red. Two girls stood up with red ribbons and waved the ribbons.

The second colour was Orange. The marchers came on. I thought they looked fantastic in their costumes, and they worked so hard to learn the dance.

The third colour was yellow like the bright sun. The Bananas in Pajamas looked silly in their warm Pajamas. Then two people pretended to be Yellow birds.

Now the next colour is green, my favorite colour. The Irish dancers were amazing with their flash costumes. The Irish dancers were amazing!

The next colour was blue, the colour of the sea. For blue they did Blue Suede Shoes. It was just wonderful!

The next colour was indigo, the colour of beetroot. For indigo, it was these two girls who did an indigo rap. They were quite nice after all.

The next colour is purple, the colour of pretty purple poppies! They did the flying purple people eater! It was so funny!

Next they had a girl play the violin and I nearly cried! It was so lovely!

Soon it was the Rainbow Connection. It was all the colours of the rainbow! My favourite part was when they did the waltz. It was so romantic!

My favourite part was when they did the Irish dancing! I think I want to relive it again!

Diary Writing

On super Saturday, I went to the strong, powerful butcher shop to buy the lovely lamb and beef for twenty five dollars.

Then we went to the delicious bakery. We got healthy sandwiches. I crossed the road with my excellent dad.

When we got to our car, we saw my wonderful grandfather so I called him and we went to our lovely home. We put the lamb in the oven.

Finally after 25 minutes the lamb was done. It was delicious. I can’t wait until next time for that lamb.

The Pinnacles

Last Saturday a friend and I walked up a very steep track to the Pinnacles in the Coromandel. It took us 6 hours to go up and back. We were exhausted when we reached the hut, then we still had to climb for another 30 minutes up over 500 steps, 2 ladders and clamber up boulders to get to the very top! It was very hard but very satisfying.

Diary Writing

On super sad Sunday, I skipped through the extremely long grass to the playground.

I was on the monkey bars when my quiet cousin pushed me off and the wood pushed my cuticle back and also damaged my toe nail. My toe nail went white, purple then blue. Now it is very sore to squeeze it hard. It is painful to walk on as well. I am so lucky that my toe nail didn't come right off my skin! I am so lucky that I am not in hospital right now. I am glad that I'm at school and not in hospital.

Then we walked back through the long grass to go home. My favourite part was the monkey bars because you can swing, jump, miss bars and climb. I felt extremely happy and excited to go there.

Diary Writing - At the Beach

Last Sunday I went to the Papatoetoe beach. We brought three boogey boards, 1 shovel and 4 buckets.

Later we built sand castles. Eventually one big wave was coming towards us and we nearly lost a boogie board.

Meanwhile, I started to surf again and then a big rip knocked me off the boogie board. It felt like I was running towards a rhino.

After a while my boogie board got stuck in a bumpy rock. I was trying to keep calm but suddenly a beastly wave nearly washed me away.

During the day we made a bigger sand castle so we don't get hit. If we saw a wave coming, we always put the bucket over it.

In the end we got dressed and drove back home. My favourite part of the day was going back home.

Iron Brion Show

On Thursday, the Middle school went to the auditorium. We sat down on the floor. When I looked up I saw some colours.I thought the ceiling was on fire. Then Mark came and he did a big jump. Then a girl came. They were playing hide and seek. Mark and the girl couldn't find Iron Brion. The middle school made a loud sound. Then Iron Brion came into the auditorium. Mark and Brion did a chest bumb. Mark said, "Where were you hiding?" Brion said, "Im not telling." Mark said, "Please." Brion said that he was hiding in the toilet. It was the girl's toilet.

Iron Brion was very big. His head and his hair were like a gargantuan. After that Mark went outside to make hamburgers.

Brion and the girl showed us the four food groups. The first one was meat and meat alternatives. The second one was fruit and vegetables. The third one was milk and dairy products. The lucky last one was bread and cereals.

Brion said "Who wants to dance with me?" Then Brion said to the teacher, "Will you choose a girl and a boy from your class?" Mrs Armitage told Zaeem to go and dance. I don't know who the girl was because I only looked at the boys. Darren did the best dance. He got the hat first. I thought Suliasi was the best. He copied Iron Brion. Iron Brion was the funniest.

Then Brion went back to the girls toilet. We went outside to eat hamburgers. There was a vegetarian and a beef line. On the burger they put tomato, salad, beef and mayonaise.

Around the World!

Gardening

In the holidays I gardened with my dad. We took the roots out of the dirt and mud. I saw fat worms, short worms, long worms, and even skinny worms. The garden is about 10 metres long. My dad and I have only done half of it.

How we got the roots out was; first you have to get a shovel and turn the dirt or mud over. Then you have to get a rage and rake the roots out.

My dad was thinkling about getting a worm farm, and to get some vegetable plants, fruit plants and maybe he might get some herbs.

The next day we carried on with the work. My mum brought some drinks for me and my dad. We planted some chilli plants that were in pots. Then we decided that we should plant them into our garden. My dad planted the big one and I planted the small one.

It was fun planting and digging. I hope we do it again some day!

Painting Techniques

We have been learning to use painting techniques in our landscapes. We used dry brush for the hills and sky. We used dark tones, then mid tones, then light tones to create depth. We used drag for the sea. Then we sketched flying objects on black paper. Next we cut them out and glued them on our paintings. We are proud of our paintings. We hope you like them too.

Karate World Cup

When I went to Australia, I didn’t go for a trip. I went there to compete for the world cup. I stayed at the Parade Inn. We had to walk all the way to the tournament which was three blocks away. I was very tired.

When we got there, we put our Geys on and we got in our groups and did our kata. Kata is karate movements and kumitay is like smack downs too. Then we fought a non contact battle.

There were 1300 people and I came 3rd on smack downs and 1st in kata.

After that we went to the Zoo to celebrate and we went to dinner 5 times in a row.

Parachute Recount

Today Mrs Armitage brought her red parachute to show the Middle school. She chose Keziah to put in on because she is tall and brave.

Mrs Armitage showed us the parts on the harness. There was the altimeter, main parachute and reserve parachute. The main parachute is the first one. For example, when you jump out of an aeroplane the main comes out. If the main parachute does not come out or gets confused with the wires then you can just pull the reserve parachute. You can land without getting hurt. That is why they have a main parachute and a reserve parachute.

There is a little parachute that Mrs Armitage pulled out. She kept pulling until the main parachute came out. She chose 3 strong people to hold Keziah then she let the wind inflate the parachute.

The parachute was fluffy and big. I thought the parachute would be bigger than our classroom. Then Mrs Armitage pulled the parachute back down on the turf and showed us the brakes.

When we were having questions a strong gust of wind came, as if a tornado tore through the school and the parachute pulled Keziah over. We thought she was going to fly away across Manurewa. Luckily the teachers got hold of the parachute. We were all surprised. We all had a great big laugh. Then Itomi sat on the parachute so it wouldn’t fly away.

Should we have solar panels at home?

I believe we should have solar panels at home.

Firstly, if we use electricity we will be wasting resources. Coal is a nonrenewable resource. People use it to make electricity. But if we use solar panels, we will be catching the sunlight to make electricity instead.

Secondly, with solar p0wer you don't have to pay for how much power you use. But you have to pay for how much you use with power from power lines.

Thirdly, generating power from other resources such as coal, makes pollution but solar power doesn't because it is energy from the sun.

Daniel

Should we have a compost heap at home?

I think we should have a compost heap.
Firstly, we put all our food scraps in the compost heap instead of the rubbish bin. Then less rubbish will go to the landfill.

Secondly, we can use some kitchen and garden waste to make compost for our garden.

Thirdly, composting recycles nutrients into the soil and the plants can have healthier soil.

Therefore I believe that we should have a compost heap at home.

Litter Adjective Poem

On my way to school
I saw a packet
It was a broken packet
It was a brown, broken packet
It was a cold, brown, broken packet
It was a plastic, cold, brown, broken, packet
It was a round, plastic, cold, brown, broken packet
So I picked it up and put it in the rubbish bin.

Police Visit

Constable Dave came to our school and into our class. His job is to go to schools and tell children about the police and to help people. We talked about the police.

Then Constable Dave gave us some photos. We had to write the number on the paper and write what's happening in the pictures.

Constable Dave took his jacket off and showed us his tools. He had a baton, pepper spray, hand cuffs and a first aid kit.

This is the fun part. We walked to the car park. Constable Dave turned the car sirens and lights on. We sat in the car. I sat on the front seat. I spoke on the radio.

It was so much fun. I can't wait to next year to have fun again.

Police Visit

On Friday a police man came to our class to tell us about the police.

First he told us about the jobs police do like catch robbers, stop drink drivers, stop speeders and much more.

After that he put some pictures on the desks for us to explain to him.

Then he showed us his tools. They were handcuffs, pepper spray, baton, firearm, walkie talkie, taser, first aid kit and bullet proof vest.

After that we walked to his car. When we got there he put on his siren and let us sit in his car.

I had so much fun I can't wait for next time.My favourite part was sitting in the police car.

Oil and Water Don't Mix!!!

Oil and water don't mix because oil sits on top of the water.

Oil gets into water because of boats loaded with oil breaking in half, people pouring oil into drains or sinks and people spilling oil into the water when filling up their boat.

When oil gets into water birds swim into it and get covered with oil so they can't fly very well. Sometimes fish swim into oil thats on top of the sea, that causes the fish to not swim very well and die.

People put up a floating wall called a boom on top of the sea around the oil spill to make it stop getting any bigger, then they use a thing like a vacuum cleaner to suck up all of the oil that was on top of the water.

If you want to help stop oil getting into the water and help save the enviroment, you can try to be careful when filling up your boat and not pouring oil into drains and sinks.

Decomposition

Decomposition is when animals and plants die and their bodies break down and turn into soil by worms helping a lot. For dead animals and plants to turn into soil it needs some worms, bacteria, fungi, air, water and sun. Without worms dead animals and plants would just lie there and cover the world and wouldn't turn into soil.

When an animal or plant dies a worm will come along and eat all the good stuff out of it and poop it out to make really good fertiliser for the plants. When a Tui dies its body breaks up and a maggot eats all the soft bits and leaves the hard bits like its bones, feathers, beak, legs and head. Eventually the hard bits break up and turn into soil.

Term 2

I hope everyone has had an interesting and restful holiday!

We have lots of exciting things planned for this term. Children will be choosing a poem to present in a poster and to recite to the class. In week 3 we are going to the Botanic Gardens to learn about nature's recyclers. We also will be learning about how we can reduce our impact on the environment.

Self Portraits

Last term we worked hard on our self portraits. First we practised sketching our eyes, nose and mouth. Then we practised sketching our whole face with our features placed in the correct places and proportions. Next we sketched our face on a piece of cardboard. After that we copied our features onto smaller pieces of cardboard then cut them out and glued them on our face. Next we used more card and corrugated card to make our hair. After we had finished glueing it all on we cut our head and neck. Then Mrs A brushed a diluted wash of PVA glue over our faces to make them stronger. When that had dried we chose a hot colour and a cold colour, one for our face and one for our hair. We rolled the printing ink onto our face and hair, then placed a sheet of cartridge on top. Next we printed our portrait by putting the cardboard template and the paper through an old washing machine hand wringer. They look fantastic!
